Additional Caddie Woodlawn (Fiction) Information

"This Newbery Award winning book . . . has been reprinted with a charming reminiscence by the author about her grandmother Caddie . . . Told with style and grace and teamed with . . . fresh new illustrations, the story of Wisconsin frontier life in the 1860s will continue to attract readers today."--School Library Journal, starred review.

What Customers Say About Caddie Woodlawn (Fiction):

I think that makes the book interesting, to know that some of the events actually happened, and that the characters were based on real people.I recommend this book for either boys or girls. There are fish to catch, rafts to paddle, fields to plow, and school lessons to learn.Caddie's adventures were loosely based on the author's own grandmother. I think it was quite a fun read, and good for any age. This story takes place in 1864, on the Wisconsin frontier. The book follows the adventures of a certain girl, named Caddie Woodlawn. She is a tomboy, who likes to run around wildly with her two brothers, rather than staying inside and doing the tasks that are expected of her, like sewing, knitting, and cooking, with her mother and her older sister, Clara.Living in territory where Indians are nearby, excitement is always brewing.

One of the things "Caddie" did was sell something her Native American friend gave to her, it was like a belt or i don't know because the author didn't explain it very well. This book couldn't of been worse. All i'm saying is this book is terrible. I usually like Newbery Honor books but this was a disgrace to the Newbery Honor system. I had to read it for a book competition and I spent two weeks trying to read it. The book has not plot it is just about a girl who is a tomboy doing different random things.

At best, I believe the book is now a period piece - an illustration of what girls used to have to endure. Even as a child I was dismayed that Caddie's real character had been suppressed. This book was disturbing to me as a child, and I am continually surprised that it maintains its place in the girls' canon. Caddie begins the novel as an engaging tomboy, but her conversion to "lady" is unconvincing - especially since the conversion is produced by corporal punishment.

It reminded me of Laura Ingalls Wilder bks I really like. The book is based on the author's grandmother's childhood adventures. I am a 10 yr old 4th grade girl. Caddie Woodlawn is a tomboy growing up in Wisconsin in the late 1800s, around the time of the Civil War. Caddie & 2 of her 6 siblings, brothers Tom & Warren are together all the time, along w/dog Nero. I was assigned a Newbery Medal bk for a school bk rpt. My mom recommended this bk, & I thought it looked good.

So I bought it and re-read it recently, now that I'm "grown up." Even after all these years, "Caddie Woodlawn" is still one of my all time favorite books. I read this when I was in the 5th grade or so, and I remember LOVING it to death. I give it a big juicy 16 thumbs up. This is such a fun book to read. I recommend it to anyone who has a young heart and who loves reading about adventures.
